As the final weekend of this Giro approaches, it gets harder and harder to win time on the current GC leader Contador. Tomorrow’s stage of the ‘media montagna’ category, however, does provide the riders with a chance to gain seconds by going in the attack using the first 70, mostly flat, kilometers. Departing from Morbegno, the peloton travels south along the ‘Lago di Como’ through Bergamo and towards the arrival town of San Pellegrino Terme, where the well-known mineral water drink is produced. Indeed, the riders will be needing some refills since the Passo di Ganda (9.2km climb at 7.3% – cat. 2) awaits with its summit at only 30 kilometers from the finish line. Follow is a long descent with some uphill parts. The riders will move down 726 meters in 25 kilometers as they ride into Ambria and enter the flat section, ideal for the final sprint. The last 1.5 kilometers have some tricky corners and a bit false flat making it a challenging arrival. Finally, this ‘tappa’ is the last flat-finish stage of this Giro as the upcoming days are ‘alta’ with the ‘finale’ uphill. Current GC: 1. Contador (SBS) 2. Scarponi (LAM) +4’58″ 3.
