Giro d'Italia 2011 (stage 20)

For the penultimate tappa of this Giro, which is the final road racing stage at the same time, the peloton will go south from Verbania on the shore of Lago Maggiore to skiing resort Sestrière over a total of 242 kilometers. The course remains fairly flat for the first 190 kilometers as the riders leave two provinces behind them and enter the Provincia di Torino. But then the riders encounter some serious and long climbing. Indeed, as the contenders come into Torino at 144.1 kilometers into the race, 70 kilometers are left to get all pumped up before the Colle delle Finestre (18.5km climb at 9.2% – cat. 1), with its summit at 2178 meters. As if a first-rated climb at 27.5 kilometers before the finish line with some tricky unpaved sections isn’t enough, the final climb going to Sestrière (16.2km climb at 3.8% – cat. 2) follows immediately after descending 768 meters into Pourrieres. In fact, Sestrière celebrates its 100th Giro anniversary this year and it remains to be seen whom of the riders will rejoice his stage win along! Funny detail: this climb is also included in this year’s Tour de France during stage 17, which runs from Gap to Pinerolo. Current GC: 1. Contador (SBS) 2. Scarponi (LAM) +5’18″ 3. Nibali (LIQ) +5’52″ 4. Gadret (ALM) +7’53″ 5. Sivtsov (THR) +9’58″. You can follow our live updates on Twitter at 14:30 CET and livestreams will be available as well.
