Giro d'Italia 2011 (stage 21)

Time flies: after three enervating weeks the Giro will come to its end. Normally, there won’t be any major shifts in the general classification. However, time is still of essence in tomorrow’s stage as the riders face an individual time trial in Milan. Initially, the track had a length of 31.5 kilometers. Due to local elections that are held as well, the organization decided to shorten the race by 5.5 kilometers and re-route the track to lower the impact on city traffic. The start has been moved from Castello Sforzesco in the centre to the Rho Fiera Milano convention centre, just outside Milan. The modification brings on a more technical first part of the track since it includes quite some corners. The first chronometry is after 8.9 kilometers in Pero – Via Sempione. Thereafter, the race carries on into the direction of Corso Sempione where a second chronometry takes place and we already get a good insight of the standings. With less than 8 kilometers to go, the riders can step on it and head to the traditional finish in the centre of Milan at the famous Piazza Duomo. The last kilometer is a bit tricky with four sharp corners, so riders need to stay watchful until the very last end. For most riders the goal will be to bring their Giro to a happy conclusion. For the time trial specialists in the bunch, it’s a final chance to head home with a grand tour stage victory in their pocket. When the Maglia Rosa has crossed the finish, we’ll know who has been able to make name and fame in this year’s Giro. Current GC: 1. Contador (SBS) 2. Scarponi (LAM) +5’18″ 3. Nibali (LIQ) +6’14 4. Gadret (ALM) +7’49″ 5. Rodriguez (KAT) +9’27″. We will start our live updates on Twitter at 16:00 CET and livestreams will be available as well.
