Vuelta a España (stage 4)

Stage 4 takes the peloton from Málaga to Valdepeñas de Jaén (183,8 kilometres), which was never a stage town before. It is a challenging day for the riders on hilly terrain and with 3 climbs they encounter: Alto de Zafarraya (910 metres at km 56,5 – cat. 2), Alto de Montefrío (1040 metres at km 122 – cat. 3) and finally the Alto de Valdepeñas de Jaén (1090 metres at km 176 – cat. 2). The route stays along the Mediterranean coast until Torre del Mar, but from there it goes north and immediately ascends. It will remain going up and down for the rest of the day. From the summit of today’s last climb, it is only 7,8 kilometres to the finish line. Mostly descending, but a surprise awaits in the final kilometre. A very steep and short climb, even more difficult than yesterday’s one. Again a good possibility for an attacker or small group. Current GC: 1. Gilbert / 2. Rodriguez 14″ / 3. Sivtsov 22″ / 4. Van Garderen 26″ / 5. Nibali 28″. Our live updates from the stage on Twitter start at 16:00 CET and livestreams are up as usual.
